Shivani Kumar | Certificate in Hairdressing, Certificate in Barbering
Cut Above Academy is a stalwart in the Auckland hair and beauty scene and with graduates like Shivani Kumar you can see why.
Shivani studied at the Academy up until the end of 2014 and even before completing her qualifications she had made it to finalist stage in the 2014 NZ Association of Registered Hairdressers (NZARH) Editorial Stylist awards.
“The awards were such a fantastic opportunity. It was a day-long event that included a lot of showcasing. I went along not knowing anyone and although I did not take out the top position I ended up meeting quite a few people in the industry.”
Cut Above to her is one big family with students and tutors alike all pushing each other to achieve. Even post-graduation Shivani still pops in to catch up with old tutors and current students. She credits the Academy with much of her own personal development over the past two years.
“Cut Above is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. It has changed me so much, in so many good ways. When I first started I was so shy. After just a couple of years I am a new person. I am far more outgoing and social.”
Currently working at one of New Zealand’s top salons, Vada in Auckland central, Shivani sees hairdressing as the ultimate career move and her new employer has nothing but high praise for her work so far.
“We’ve found Shivani to be very reliable, a trait that is invaluable. We have another part time assistant who is still studying at Cut Above. She shares many of the same attributes in terms of her commitment and reliability. The practical work that we see from both girls is also of a high standard. They’re obviously given solid instruction in the basics that they’ll need straight away.”
With dreams of travel, national awards, magazine showcases and one day self-employment, Shivani sees hairdressing as a progressive and exciting industry to be a part of.
"It’s creative, it’s about thinking outside the box and it’s about not always sticking with the rules."
Congratulations on your success Shivani!
